Hues of red and purple fill the costumes and scenery of Carmen, further enhancing the sensuality of the ballet. It is not common for two ballets to be combined in one program. The Boston Ballet, though, does not shy away from the unconventional. For their spring performance of Carmen, the company includes both Carmen and Kingdom of the Shades in their 100-minute show, broken up by an intermission. Audience members get to experience the delicately controlled choreography of Kingdom of the Shades and the passionate drama of Carmen during their time at the Citizens Bank Opera House. This dance requires extreme technical skill and seemed like a painstaking ordeal at times. The audience could hear the squeaking of the ballet shoes and the slight shaking as the corps de ballet  — the group of non-principal dancers performing as the shades — fought to keep their balance. One could only imagine the amount of preparation it took to perform such a notoriously difficult piece. 21+, access is not guaranteed, entry is based on availability and capacity. I called him for a wide-ranging interview, from FARHOF inductee-connections and his upcoming Boston exhibit, to Dylan’s wild book recommendations, Bob Weir’s dream visions, and the unexpected origin of his stage name.

Having already been established as “Betty’s band,” they got calls to open up for different acts, including Graham Central Station. He taught himself to play eight instruments over time. “They told me they needed a sax player so I got my hands on a saxophone and taught myself to play,” Mills said in a 2015 interview.

Mills, never one to slow down, later created the Sweet Dreams ensemble while working as an artist-in-residence at the Afro-American Cultural Center in Charlotte in 1985. Revel in the spirit of this time by styling your coffin nail designs with seasonal motifs. The trend of coffin nails, more commonly known as ballerina-shaped ones, has taken the world by storm, and it’s easy to see why. This particular nail shape can balance casual looks and dramatic flair since its tips are tapered towards an end that is flat in shape, making it look squared off, too.

If you're looking for a way to make your coffin nails stand out even more, try combining matte and glitter shades of the same polish color. Glitter and matte black shades are an unexpected combo that offers a lot of visual interest to the set of coffin nails.

While nail art has helped launch coffin nails to social stardom, the look has also gained popularity because of improved ease and accessibility. "Up until two years ago, there was no such thing as coffin-shaped nail tips," says Alex Vong, a nail artist based in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Nail techs had to hack the shape by "sculpting it using a nail form, or cutting off the pointed end of a stiletto tip," he adds. Super long pink nails get a fun and funky update with this cute decoupage style.

Mary McDonald is an award-winning, widely published interior designer located in Los Angeles, as well as one of the stars of Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Decorators and Property Envy series. The top interior designer works for premium clientele such as renowned celebrities and is known for her flamboyant and fearless design method, which is evident in her glamorous and timeless workmanship. The final key element of the California Casual Minimalist look is textured textiles. The goal is to create an inviting and comfortable space without being overly fussy.

Add organic and natural elements

Choose furniture with clean lines and simple silhouettes, and avoid anything overly ornate or fussy. Since California casual style is all about simplicity and ease, it’s a good idea to keep your spaces uncluttered and light. Incorporate wooden accents like a live edge coffee table or a reclaimed wood bench. While there are some similarities, there are also a few key differences that separate California casual from other decorating styles. Even more admirable, California decorators, creators, and tastemakers understand the historic importance of place, paying homage to the landscape around them and the makers who came before them.

Martyn Lawrence Bullard is a household figure in the United States and the United Kingdom, courtesy to his Bravo TV series Million Dollar Decorators and Hollywood Me. The British-born designer, unsurprisingly, traveled to Hollywood 20 years ago to pursue a career as an actor. After appearing in an Ed Wood picture, he was hired to decorate the headquarters of Wood’s production firm.

Invest in timber furniture

Start with a basic vase or bowl, and then add plates, mugs, or Candleholders in coordinating colors and styles. The California Casual minimalist look is a popular design style that emphasizes clean lines and simple silhouettes. The light color of the floors will help reflect light and make the space appear larger. In addition, the minimalist style of the floors will complement any contemporary furniture.

Getting multiple bids is the best way to ensure you get a fair price and that bids include the complete scope of work. Whether you add an antique side table in a living room, vintage wall decor in a hallway, or an aged light fixture above an island, injecting something with a bit of age and ware will instantly give your scheme more character.

One of the home’s most enticing assets was natural light streaming in from the front and the back, a rarity in local spaces of this size. “There was a plastic kitchen with a refrigerator blocking the entry, and a plastic bathroom,” she remembers of the 1980s details. Helgerson gutted both spaces during her yearlong renovation, additionally removing a wall that separated the living and dining rooms to create a more gracious sweep. Green is a recurring theme, appearing in fabrics, furniture, tile, paint, and artworks—a conscious nod to the neighborhood’s many trees and parks.

In a north-facing room, you might need to use a warmer white to offset the chill,’ he explains. A rougher, textural shiplap paneling can help create a more rustic feel, and contrasts with the eggshell finish of painted kitchen units. Shiplap can be painted in any color, but it is important to dilute the paint so that the texture of the timber shows through.

Home Tour: Inside the $126 Million the One Mansion in Bel Air

the bell house

More akin to a private hotel than a home, La Fin is perched high on a hill overlooking Bel-Air, downtown LA and Century City. In Los Angeles, where luxury comes with the territory, La Fin takes it to the next level. Located at 1200 Bel Air Road in the tony Bel-Air neighborhood, the mega-mansion is now on the market for $139 million.

Top Story

So it comes as no surprise that his development La Fin feels similar to the no-expense-spared nature of the One—albeit with a slightly lower price tag. Dr. Englanoff named it La Fin, which translates to ‘the end’ in French, because it signifies the buyer has reached the end of his search for the perfect home. The 105,000-square-foot Bel Air megamansion, which took well over 10 years to build, has come across its share of logistical and legal problems over the years, but was finally sold at auction on March 3.

Also, it could have construction defects and zoning code violations, according to allegations in court documents.

As this is a home designed for entertaining, La Fin exceeds the typical expectations there, too. The first is an indoor theater with motorized seating wrapped in Belgian leather, while the second is an outdoor theater with a hydraulic, 23-foot LED screen. Of course, the home is wrapped in windows which welcome in plenty of natural light and frame views in each room. Throughout the home there are magnificent custom crystal chandeliers; most impressive, however, is the 44-foot chandelier that cascades through the center of the grand spiral staircase connecting the home’s three floors. Though LA is filled with glass box-style modern homes, La Fin’s level of opulence feels more apt for Dubai than the US. Shiny marble floors, gold accents, gleaming chandeliers and lacquered wood are just a few design details that are sure to attract a buyer who appreciates the finer things in life.

Record deals and tax-avoidance maneuvers: Southern California’s priciest sales of 2023

The hilltop home, said to be 105,000 square feet, was marketed for $500 million several years ago while under construction but didn’t find a buyer. It was placed into bankruptcy in October after Hankey foreclosed on the $106 million in debt defaulted on by Crestlloyd, the limited liability company established by Niami that legally owns the project. The amount of debt attached to the property originally totaled about $180 million but has since grown to $256 million as more creditors have made claims, according to a March 2 court filing. That means many creditors will take losses — even though most of the auction house’s 12% fee will be returned to the bankrupt estate, which is not a typical arrangement. More than three dozen prospective buyers toured the 944 Airole Way property over the last couple of months, including billionaires from the Middle East, Asia and California, The One’s listing agents have said. The property includes a 4,000-square-foot guesthouse, a sky deck with cabanas, a private theater, a full-service spa, a nightclub and even an outdoor running track and moat. Concierge Auctions last year set an auction record when it sold a Beverly Park home for $51 million — but that was still more than $100 million off its original asking price. Concierge said The One was the largest home ever sold at auction. The largest single creditor is Los Angeles billionaire Don Hankey, who lent $106 million to the dream project of developer Nile Niami. The lender is owed more than $130 million in secured debt, including money he provided in bankruptcy to repair and spiff up the property for sale. The buyer will be disclosed by March 8, when paperwork must be submitted to U.S.

While that price tag may sound outlandish, there’s no denying the home’s bevy of amenities make it unique, even among other jaw-dropping estates in Los Angeles. After years of court battles, Mohamed Hadid’s 30,000-square-foot mansion will be auctioned off to the highest bidder and then torn down. Broker Stephen Shapiro, the founding partner of Westside Estate Agency, said the low price reflected the “out-of-control ego” of Niami, who built a huge house that wasn’t really a home. Turnaround specialist Lawrence Perkins, who was put in charge of Crestlloyd when the home was placed into bankruptcy, said the “market spoke” at the auction. However, he also said it was his responsibility to continue fielding late offers that might top the auction price.

How to Get Rid of Dog Fleas American Kennel Club

how to get rid of fleas in the house fast

From regular pet grooming to natural home remedies, these strategies can help you maintain a flea-free environment over the long term. A mix of apple cider vinegar and water can be a natural way to repel fleas. Clean your hard surfaces with this solution to keep fleas at bay. Fleas can cause a range of health issues for humans, from minor allergic reactions and irritations to serious infections and diseases. Treating fleas early on will make it less likely for a pet to develop tapeworm and other flea-related diseases. And sometimes the side effects don't stop at discomfort and skin irritation, according to Dr. Paola Cuevas Moreno, a veterinarian and behaviorist with Hepper.com.

Grooming helps spot fleas and ticks

If you do aim to use an insecticide or other chemical cleaning treatment, please proceed with caution. Since the flea has multiple life stages (egg, larvae, cocoon, adult), when adult fleas are present, it is assumed all of these stages are also present throughout your house. This means that you have to tackle the problem from all angles in order to truly eradicate the infestation. If you have fleas in the house, you can usually expect some itching, as well as unwelcome red bumps on the skin.

Preventing Future Infestations

“First of all, take a deep breath — there's a lot of really great products out there that are safe,” Kratt said. “But you should contact your veterinarian first, because they are going to know the best products suited for your individual pet. Extreme infestations can cause bleeding issues, dermatitis and other skin irritations, and they can also assist in transferring internal parasites — mainly tapeworms,” he explained. The best approach involves multiple steps that target fleas, larvae and eggs on your pet, in your house and in your yard.

GETTING STARTED IN DOG SPORTS

The EPA warns homeowners about the use of non-EPA-approved pesticides and the dangers of using some over-the-counter flea treatments. For fast and safe treatment, it’s best to have a professional pest management company treat your home. As long as your pet is on flea preventative, that’ll be enough time to rid your home of fleas for good. And don’t forget to wash throw blankets on the sofa and bed sheets—anywhere your pet hangs around. Finally, use your preferred insecticide, which experts say is a necessity for moderate to severe infestations.

Permethrin is a common chemical in these treatments that repel and kill fleas, according to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Applications containing permethrin can also repel ticks, mosquitoes and other insects. If your infestation is severe, you may need the help of a professional product or pest control company that offers a flea removal service. Be sure to use caution and follow meticulous directions if this type of intervention is needed. Take care to protect your pets and family by thoroughly reading the company's instructions and following them diligently.

Once inside the trap, fleas stick to a glue board, which you can then remove and replace periodically. Glue traps generally only capture adult fleas, so they shouldn’t be used as stand-alone treatments. When you notice black or brown spots in the comb, dunk it into the bowl to kill the fleas. Fleas can be tricky to kill because they’re rather good at hiding, and they can live for a year or longer, says Cornell University’s Insect Diagnostic Lab. Also, depending on whom you ask, experts say a flea can lay anywhere from 500 to 5,000 eggs during its lifetime.

Some of these treatments kill existing fleas and prevent future infestations. Starting your pet on a flea and tick prevention medication is worth the expense. Talk to your vet about finding the right product for your pet’s size, age, and health..

If you’re looking to invest in a cordless vacuum cleaner, consider this one from Dyson. With a runtime of up to 40 minutes on a single charge, according to the brand, it’s designed to trap up to 99.99% of microparticles on hardwood and carpeting. It is also great for households with pets thanks to the Hair screw tool that removes hair from pet beds, stairs and more, Dyson says. Kratt said vacuuming helps a lot during flea infestations, but you need to dispose of the bag immediately.

Plan to do it when your family and Fido are out of the house, since footstep vibrations entice fleas to hop around or cause immature fleas to pop out of their cocoons. Also, this’ll ensure you aren’t using any toxic pesticides around your loved ones. For heavy infestations, it’s best to toss everything into a kitchen trash bag, seal it, and throw it out, according to Terminix pest control services. Next, bathe your pet using pet-friendly shampoo, which is also enough to kill the insects. We don’t recommend flea shampoo because some pets can be allergic—some brands are unregulated—and many flea shampoos are toxic when used on the wrong pet species. A repeat vacuuming of the carpet, floor, and any other areas will help get rid of any remaining fleas.

When there are lots of soft surfaces in your home, then fleas will have more places to hide. Excess fabric around your house can provide fleas with an ideal hiding place. This can include fabric on things like furniture, bedding, and clothing. While you likely aren’t going to want to get rid of all of your clothes or bedding, reducing the extra can help with your flea problem. A good way to check if your pet has fleas is to groom them using a fine-toothed comb held over something white, like a piece of kitchen paper. Add a few drops of water, and if the droppings turn reddish brown it's very likely your pet has fleas.

Read our guide on the tell-tale signs your pet has fleas for more information. "Flea eggs can be brought into your home on your cat or dog's coat, and then they can remain undetected for some time." A person with symptoms of infection from a flea bite should see a doctor as soon as possible. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals advise adding a few drops of water to any specks that fall out. If they turn reddish brown, they are likely to be flea droppings. The EPA advise replacing old bedding if the infestation is particularly serious.

The strong scent will kill the fleas and leave your home smelling fresh. Adult fleas live on the fur of animals where they will lay their eggs. The average life cycle of a flea is around 100 days, however, they can live indoors for up to a year if the conditions are favourable to them. Avoid bathing your cat more than once per week while dealing with fleas. Pick up things laying around, wash clothing and other items on the floor, dust, remove trash, and generally make things are orderly and clean as possible. You should also avoid using any disinfectants with your cat nearby, so be sure to separate them while you’re using these products.

However, filled with chemicals, commercial treatments often stand at odds with the sustainable garden ideas. Fleas are one of the most frustrating and persistent insect infestations that can occur in a home, especially because they bury themselves in carpets, sofas, and seemingly every corner of a room. Just six miles from Padstow’s charming fishing harbour, Tawny Owl is a chic, eco-friendly lodge in a beautiful location. What About Cat Shampoo?

There are several options out there, from flea collars to topical liquid applicants and pills. Talk to your vet about the flea preventative that is safest and right for your puppy or dog. These tiny, blood-sucking parasites irritate your dog and infest your home — often before you realize they’ve moved in. Many dogs are allergic to flea bites, which can cause intense scratching, red and flaky skin, scabs, hot spots, and hair loss. Bravecto’s flavored chewables offer 12 weeks of protection against fleas and ticks, the brand says. These can be purchased directly from your vet or through Chewy with a prescription.

Finally, consult your veterinarian about a flea preventative medication, which will kill any fleas before they multiply. I’ve never had a pet who’s on a flea preventative bring bugs into the home, and this protects them and me from contracting flea-borne illnesses—so it’s worth the investment. To rid your home of fleas, you’ll need to do a thorough cleaning, both inside and out. If the infestation is severe or you can’t clean your home from top to bottom, contact your local pest-control agency. It will come up with a game plan that’ll get the job done quickly and safely. A single adult female flea can produce up to 2,000 eggs in her lifetime.

There’s a hammock on the first floor veranda, and it’s a great spot to swing and take in the view. Four-legged friends have their own space in the ‘Doghouse’ and walks across the North York Moors are a must-do. Dogs can get fleas in many ways, but the most common way is from one animal to another. Our furry friends are always socialising, so fleas can easily jump from fur to fur.

Step 1: Brush your pet with a flea comb

A week or two after treatment, you may find that fleas have returned. If so, vacuum the entire house once more, again taking care to empty the machine outside. You may also consider using flea traps to vanquish the remaining pests. Try mixing a bit of dish soap into a bowl of water; the mixture kills any fleas that fall in. Likely targets are the lamps in the same room as your pet’s preferred sleeping area.

Then take the full vacuum bag or canister contents and seal it in a kitchen trash bag so any rogues don’t escape. You’ll need to vacuum and discard the bag every other day for two weeks to about a month. Steam cleaning your carpets, furniture and pet bed is a brilliant idea if you have a flea infestation. Thanks to the combination of high heat and soap, the fleas will be gone in no time.

There are also four floors of restful rooms to keep everyone happy. Fleas do not live on humans, but they can still bite people around the ankles and legs. Bites from fleas can occasionally trigger allergic reactions, although they will not have a serious impact on someone's health. Brooke spent nine years as a veterinary assistant before becoming a human nurse in 2013. Brooke loves all animals and currently shares a home with three dogs, two cats, five fish, and two snails.

Be aware that in the process of vacuuming, disturbed by the vibrating machine, fleas may actually emerge. Although flea combs aren’t necessarily natural, they are a good way to reduce the number of fleas on your cat without using harsh chemicals. Aim to brush your cat with a flea comb at least once per day to pull fleas off of them.

Clean the baseboards, furniture area, underneath it, everywhere the pet lays and spend time. This explains why it is imperative one look for ways to get rid of fleas. These eggs are laid by the adult females after eating and they can take 2 days to 2 weeks to hatch.

You may have to do this a few times before you remove all the fleas. However, if your flea infestation is larger, you may want to try a few of the methods detailed below. If one of your pets has fleas, it’s safe to assume that the others in the house do as well. In fact, the one that you’re treating might not have even been the original source of the flea infestation. If you want to get the fleas under control, make sure to have all in contact animals treated by a vet. If your cat’s diet is not providing them with all the nutrition they need, then there’s a chance that their immune system may struggle to appropriately respond to a flea infestation.

Again, it’s important to ask your dog’s veterinarian for recommendations. Flea and tick preventatives kill fleas that come in contact with your dog, preventing your pup from bringing them home in the first place.
